Personal Evaluation.

Unit X has been a whole new experience for me, I really have enjoyed the challenging development of the project. It was nice to work as part of a group and we were lucky to get along well and remain professional when it came to any disagreements. When we discovered that the outcome would be a film it felt very daunting, but we worked to our strengths and learnt a lot of new skills within film.
It was a different way of working compared to all of the other projects, but I can definately say we dedicated alot of hours to our final outcome and are all really pleased/relieved! with the outcome.
I enjoyed not working within the limits of a sketchbook and having the freedom to explore our own ideas and do our own research.
I really enjoyed exploring texture and dyeing my own fabrics for sampling, I felt that the project flowed very well, and I am really pleased with our final film.

This week we have been in uni as a group from 10am until 7pm! We have put lots of hours in to make sure we are all happy with our final film.
We had lots of edits of the film(on group blog) and realised the problems with trying to combine files between MACs and laptops!
Monday; We started trying to collaborate all of the filming we had done over the project, we soon realised this was too difficult, we had too much variation in filming and our ideas behind the project were not clear enough.
Tuesday ;we focused alot on making it clearer and using the parts that we thought best represented our project.
We thought the projection work and our drawing film portrayed our project well.
The whole editing process was very exhausting but we are slowly seeing the end result.

We always had the idea of a 'hidden' element to our project and so at the start of the week we did envisage projecting our film onto a shirt. But after experimenting, we found that the quality of the film would not be as clear, and so we had to abandon this idea.

Helen Storey

Her work is a bit like our work in the way that she uses dissolvable fabric on this dress.....

It is simuliar to the work we did with dissolvable fabric on the skin. She also concentrates on the body a lot, reminds me of our projections of our samples onto Emma's body....

Watercolour, next to me hand stitch samples. I love the different warm colours in these samples.

After dissolving my stitched piece, i wanted to see what it looked like against a wall. I did this piece with brickwork texture in mind. I didnt quite find the right colour bricks!

 More Sampling...

All of these samples I have based around my map work of Manchester....

I put this one in black and white as it emphasises the texture of the threads and layering.

This is the same sample, I used dissolvable fabric on the map stitching and then layered lots over my dyed samples.

This is just dissolvable fabric on top of one piece of dyed fabric

Development

After adding my 'dissolvable fabric maps' to my shirt I dyed my shirt a terracotta colour to represent the colour of bricks. It didnt quite work out the colour I wanted but it shows the 'hidden' theme that has gone on through the project....

These pictures dont look like stitch, they remind me of blood vessels, something you would find in the inside of the body.

Group Work...

Me, Lara, Grace and Lamia spent a few hours drawing from our pictures and samples. We used large pieces of paper and filmed the whole process. We are hoping to add it to our final film piece.

Hand Stitching

On the train home I looked at the textures on top of brickwork, using french knots and hand stitch.
It took a while but i really liked the textures achieved. I did it onto dissolvable fabric so that I can dissolve it later to see how well it stays together.

 First Ideas for Final Film

Over the last few weeks we have done a lot of experimental filming and so we have lots of ideas.....

  • Aiming for a film that will be 5mins long
  •  Starting with a breathing sequeal; reprensenting the 'hidden, inside' element, move to  flashing images of our samples
  • It is proving difficult to include all of our filming in our final piece, we have lots of different elements to try and include, something we need to refine.
  • 'Slow is beautiful' references, speeding up film and slowing down
  • Reference to brickwall, this has given us our main colour palette for our project
  • Our samples projected onto Emma and Vincent seemed to work really well, so we are aiming to include these
  • Dissolvable fabric film, speeding up and slowing down to the music
  • Building up colour intensitys from our samples..........

We still need to develop these ideas alot further.....

After having my Embellisher induction, i could finally really start to explore the texture of the brickwork we'd been looking at, and came up with these samples.

Filming...

We split up as a group and did filming in the studio and filming around Manchester, collecting lots of footage for hopefully our final video. ...

We went and filmed by Mayfield Station as we didn't want to loose the first intitial ideas we had at the first stages of our project.
